County Keeps Word, Proposes Millions for Homeowner Care Fund

18 months ago, over 600 ONE Wake members and supporters attended a hybrid assembly at Southeast Raleigh Table to call on the Wake County Commissioners to address the displacement of long time, low income homeowners in gentrifying neighborhoods. This issue emerged as a top concern after it was surfaced during a series of neighborhood canvasses and house meetings that engaged hundreds of households in the spring and summer of 2021.

Since then, ONE Wake has organized a series of follow up actions and small group negotiations supported by hundreds of ONE Wake leaders and led by our homeowner team. Over the fall of 2022 and spring of 2023, ONE Wake leaders have met regularly with the Wake County Board of Commissioners to shape a new program, the "Homeowner Care Fund," representing three pots of funds that combined would deliver $5 million to support low income homeowners and preserve hard earned generational wealth.

On Monday, County Manager David Ellis presented the Fiscal Year 2024 Recommended Budget to the Wake County Board of Commissioners. We are excited to announce that the budget includes full funding for the Care Fund, which will help keep up to 1,682 low income homeowners in their homes!

This proposed budget is the culmination of nearly two years of organizing. Now we need to make sure the budget is passed!

Please take a moment today to comment on the budget and thank the County for honoring their commitments to ONE Wake. You can find an easy to use comment form on their website here.
